Bill Gates is quoted:

“The world today has 6.8 billion people. That’s headed up to about 9 billion. Now, if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we lower that perhaps by 10 or 15 percent.”

Snopes.com, a “Fact Checker”

Snopes.com, on Bill Gates and Depopulation, state:

In June 2011, an Irish tabloid known for publishing conspiratorial content called "The Sovereign Independent" published an article about Bill Gates that carried the misleading headline "Depopulation Through Forced Vaccination: The Zero Carbon Solution!"

Further:

“It should also be noted that this was not a "newspaper" with a credible track record of reporting. Rather, this tabloid trafficked in conspiracy theories, promoting content from organizations such as AE911Truth, a group that believes 9/11 was the result of a controlled demolition, not a terrorist attack, and Infowars.com, the website operated by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who falsely claimed for years that the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a "false flag."“

They state the TED Conference in February 2010 Bill Gates quote wasn’t used to reference “killing” babies or others with vaccines, but that as babies’ survival increases, parents willingly have fewer children,

Is Snopes “Fact Checkers” Biased?

Some like Anthony Colpo say not only say yes, but hopelessly so. An April 11, 2021 article states.

“In recent years we've seen a proliferation of self-appointed "fact check" websites. All claim to be selfless, impartial, politically neutral bastions of accuracy whose only concern is battling fake news.

A closer look at these organizations, however, tends to show the exact opposite. In this article, we'll take a long, hard look at the highly dysfunctional outfit known as Snopes, one of the oldest and best-known fact check sites.”

So no, this site seems to have a lurid history.

AFP Fact Check

AFP has their own fact check:

In fact, Gates was talking about cutting global population growth by "10 or 15 percent" to reduce carbon emissions, rather than reducing the actual population. A transcript of his full speech can be found here.

In 2009, Gates recommended using vaccines to reduce child mortality rates. He said since some parents choose to have enough kids to offset high child mortality, increasing the chance of a child surviving to adulthood and encouraging parents to have smaller families would create "a virtuous cycle that takes a country out of poverty".

The Gates Foundation has repeatedly rejected the depopulation claim.

"We are concerned about the conspiracy theories being spread online and the damage they could cause to public health," its spokesperson told AFP Fact Check in October 2020.

"At a time like this, when the world is facing an unprecedented health and economic crisis, it’s distressing that there are people creating and sharing misinformation when we should all be looking for ways to collaborate and save lives."

AFP debunked a similar claim targeting Gates here in January 2021.

Steve Kirsch, whom I greatly admire and respect, says “no”. They did not even call him prior to publishing a couple perma-linked sites that conflicted with their very own claims:

Here is another fact check on the Gates TEDx Talk:

The quote in the newspaper comes from Gates' 2010 TEDx talk "Innovating to Zero" about how to reduce worldwide carbon dioxide levels to zero.

In the 27-minute clip, Gates said there are "four factors" that can solve the problem of carbon emission. One factor concerns population sustainability, but it does not make up the entire solution, as the newspaper in the video claims.

The quote comes from a TEDx talk Gate gave about how to reduce carbon emissions. His concept of population sustainability is about how to save children through improved health care services, including access to vaccinations.

Possibilities on Bill Gates’ Overpopulation

I see three options:

• Bill Gates wants to depopulate the world by making vaccines cause deaths, stillbirths, or infertility, OR

• Bill Gates wants to improve child mortality and depopulate the world through making children live longer, so parents have fewer children, OR

• Bill Gates wants to depopulate the world and pretends he just wants to prolong infant mortality.

Africans: Low Vaccination Rates and Low COVID Death Rates

United Nations News reported on September 14, 2021, just 2% of Africans were vaccinated:

The UN agency is urging every country to vaccinate at least 40% of its population by the end of this year, and hopes to help ensure that 70% of the world’s population is by the middle of next year.  

At a press conference on COVID-19 and vaccine equity in Africa, which is home to more than 1.2 billion people, Mr. Ghebreyesus informed that, so far, just two countries in Africa have reached the 40% target, the lowest of any region. 

• A January 2021 PubMed article cited several explanations:

Africa’s lower COVID-19 mortality rate is due to the lower population mean age, lower life expectancy, lower pre-COVID-19 era ‘65yr+ mortality rate’, and smaller pool of people surviving and living with cardiovascular diseases.

• Then a March 2022 PubMed article cites a “Low rate of COVID-19 vaccination in Africa: a cause for concern”.

Their introduction includes this sentence:

To date, these vaccines remain the safest and most effective tool available to combat the pandemic that has caused significant morbidities, mortalities, and economic downturns.

More than 9.5 billion doses of the vaccines have been administered across the globe, 5 with only about 3.4% (321 million) of this amount being administered in Africa based on data obtained from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) COVID-19 Dashboard last updated on 5 January 2022.

They cite possible causes of low vaccination rates:

• No African country produces COVID vaccines.

• Most or no African countries pre-ordered COVID vaccines.

• Therefore they relied on WHO’s COVAX global vaccine sharing scheme, donations, and a drive from African Union (AU).

• Finally, they state, “Many Africans were reluctant to get shots into their arms.”

• Low socioeconomic status.

• Malaria, HIV, and other diseases have caused more significant morbidities and mortalities, and low COVID death rates provide no impetus to get vaccinated'.

• Lack of infrastructure to address a COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

• Internal conflict and political crises that created instability and security concerns.

The Authors Conclusion:

The alarming low rate of COVID-19 vaccination in Africa has made the continent trail behind in the vaccination campaign, thereby putting the global vaccination progress under threat. The AU must expedite efforts to acquire adequate doses, fast-track mass vaccination campaigns, and surmount other challenges that impede vaccination. The region should also invest adequately to develop its own regional vaccines and must remain proactive against future pandemics yet unknown. High-income nations, donor organizations, and other global vaccine stakeholders should join hands to eliminate the vaccine inequity and lag facing the region for the greater good of all and to bring the pandemic to an end.
