Ep 6: Advocacy and Action: Your COVID Masterplan (Part 3)
Guest Speaker: Len Saputo, MD
Dr. Len Saputo joins us to discuss advocacy and Health Medicine, a term he coined to describe an emphasis on maintaining wellness instead of the traditional allopathic medicine disease model.
Dr. Saputo is a grandfather of the clinical use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), with over forty years of experience using different lightwave lengths to treat different disease states. Throughout the world, LLLT has been used, with thousands of articles written on the subject. Working with Maurice Bales, Dr. Saputo used thermal image color changes (before and after LLLT) to document corresponding clinical improvement.
There are many terms that mean the same thing: low level laser therapy (LLLT), photobiomodulation (PBM), light therapy, infrared light therapy, photonic stimulation (PS), low level laser therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and LED therapy.
Why does light heal? We know that it grows plants and allows us to function. LLLT uses infrared (80 nm), red and blue-spectrum light, not sunlight, gamma, x-ray or other wavelengths. Current machines are “multispectral”, producing a variety of wavelengths, each specific to its own tissue. Blue light emitted into the mouth turns “alive” teeth white.
The physics of the light is such that one wavelength affects the heart or the eye, whereas another will not.
Other uses of LLLT include blue, red, infrared light invented by Dr. Maurice Bales, whose machine cover the visible and infrared spectrums, as well as modulate the light to get rid of pathogens. Some emitter wands emit 8 spectrums, such as the Bales BioPhoton Wand, which emits 3 infrared, 3 red, and 2 blue wavelengths.
Through body heat, body converts blue light into red light.
Emitting light is one function of tissue effects, as is light penetration. Blue wavelength (400-500 nm) differs from red wavelength (600 nm) is highly absorbed by red blood cells whereas 1000 nm is highly absorbed by water.
Beneficial Effects of PBM
Increased blood flow through increased nitric oxide
Stimulates mesenchymal stem cells with Alzheimer’s - removes tangles and plaques
Increases energy through ATP production up to 75%, optimizing cell function including the brain
Decreases inflammation, swelling
Increases collagen
Kills microbes (SARS-CoV-2, MRSA)
Cancer
Boosts immunity
Clinical Results
Boosts the excitability of nervous tissue - benefits pain management with an immediate response. Diabetic neuropathy pain and numb feet may be reversed in 15 minutes. It may be that light gives energy to electrons that conduct on the sheath of the nerve. One patient with ALS who was unable to move at all, was able to move in 10 minutes. It allows the patient to get mobility and quality of life back, and does not cure ALS.
Failed back syndrome, sciatica: 5 treatments in 10 days has relieved significant pain, thermal images show improved pattens, foot patterns that show bilateral symmetry.
Headaches: resolution of headaches occurs in 3-5 minutes and chronic headaches are significantly improved over a series of treatments for 3 weeks.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RDS) or Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): The sympathetic nervous system is in the back; LLLT to the back made RSD disappear in the feet.
Rheumatoid arthritis: 70% decreased pain and improved mobility.
Postoperative pain: improved with “mild to moderate”, instead of “moderate to severe” pain. Preoperative and postoperative LLLT may prevent RSD.
Diabetic neuropathy: thermal patterns show improved blood flow, relieve of numbness, pain, balance in 15 minutes. Lasts weeks, months, or years.
Neurodegenerative disease: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Traumatic Brain Injury, stroke, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). 93-year old with Alzheimer’s and a shuffled gait brightened up in 15 minutes, “want to start dancing!” He is now 96 years old, with an impressive response due to increased blood flow, stimulates nerves and dendrites regrow and connect with other nerves, and decreased inflammation.
In one study, 10 patients treated for 4 weeks had cognitive function showed an average 35% improvement! Shining a light on a rat with Alzheimer’s on the lower back - travels to the brain and in hours, beta-amyloid tangles start to miraculously disappear.
In another study, tissue culture cells in 5 days show dendrite growth, normal growth.
Michale Hamlin has worked many years in LLLT with red and infrared, prevents tissue from dying. For Alzheimer’s and dementias, patients recovered in one study.
“Turning the Lights On” study shows infrared light deeply penetrates and has very positive outcomes.
Other studies from Harvard, Toronto, Canada showed a large functional improvement with better sleep, less anxiety and anger outbursts, less wandering after 4 weeks of treatment.
Fiberoptics and old machines, even at lower doses, works. But newer machines work even better.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI): A 22 year old, after one LLLT treatment of 25 minutes, showed EEG evidence of increased neuron complexity and communications.
TBI and Stroke: Michael Hamlin’s Harvard study shows much improvement with LLLT. Improved memory recall, PTSD, social interaction.
Macular degeneration, eye conditions have been treated with good effects.
Multiple sclerosis: A wheelchair-bound patient with abnormal shaking, eye nystagmus, was given 20 minute therapy and all the shaking stopped. It was the first time in 8 years that he could touch his face. His mother cried for two hours. He received daily treatments and could feed himself and sleep better. They purchased a home unit, and he has improved even more.
Pneumonia in elders: better lung function.
COVID: preliminary studies show early treatment is most effective for runny nose. Blue light on nose, forehead treated several times over a few days shows that the course is more rapidly resolved.
Heart disease: light over his eye shows image over the chest improves. Acupuncture meridian point for the heart is over the eye (anectodal report). Improves cardiac output and cardiac contractility with good results.
Open heart/bypass surgery: Dr. Saputo put the light on his chest pre and post-surgery, showed that the cardiac enzymes do not rise.
