On The Personal Side
Let’s talk about ABO 2098, because it will affect both our lives if it passes. Believe me, my life would be easier without a phone call to my legislator or an email to the Governor, who may not care about my opinion.
But I know YOU CARE about my opinion. And I may just be your second or third opinion doctor.
So I will not be silent. And I hope you won’t either, because I NEED YOU.
I put myself out there again today - my legislator’s offices were nice today, and very prepared to take all my information... so they must have been getting many more phone calls on SB 866! THANK YOU if you called, emailed, or signed a declaration - or Tweeted, looked up your legislator's Facebook or Instagram on SB 866, which WAS DEFEATED. NO 15-YEAR OLDS GETTING VACCINATED WITHOUT PARENTAL KNOWLEDGE! WHEW!
Sometimes I wonder - for the one hour it takes me to write this newsletter, is it worth it? Does anyone open it? Does anyone click on the links? Of course we all get data on both the "opens" and the "clicks" - and I must say that I am VERY HAPPY you care about what I say.
I LOVE you, my audience and my READERS! My stats are good and I am going to keep on writing. It is my freedom of speech and my conscience must prevail to keep making you aware of what is right and wrong, what saves lives and what kills. What causes doctors, who have the highest suicide rate of any profession, to either lose hope or keep fighting. With rampant burnout rates, doctors moving out of California, retiring early, or changing professions, we need to know we make a difference.
My voice matters. And that means that I can multiply my voice through you. It is my voice, but you are my megaphone. You resound, make me bold, and YOU spread the word.
So keep doing what you are doing, because today marks an important day - where one voice, one call and one vote can make a difference.
If you didn't make one single phone call of SB 866 - maybe you don't have children, maybe you didn't think it would pass anyway - you don't know how easy it was to just click a few clicks, make a call or two, and make your voice be heard.
Because the next time (i.e., now), your one call could make a big difference. So you need to know that it is easy, and you get a good feeling by doing something to change the future.
Because your voice is a weapon, here is another chance to make a difference: with just one vote against ABO 2098.
AB 2098 Physicians and Surgeons: Unprofessional Conduct (Low) – MD/DO Misinformation:
This bill designates the dissemination or promotion of misinformation or disinformation related to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, or “COVID-19,” as unprofessional conduct. (It does not define what "misinformation" or "disinformation" is.
So if I prescribe ivermectin, I could lose my license. If I recommend “early treatment” or disagree with the mainstream "standard of care", I could lose my license. Out the door goes my ability to prescribe "off label" medications, like aspirin for heart disease, which is not FDA approved... and neither are epidural steroid injections for back pain (see my 2017 article on Pain News Network here) approved by the FDA (but do you really think that will stop, when insurance pays for it?).
TOP REASONS TO OPPOSE SB 2098:
1. It is redundant. Pragmatically, the CA Medical Board already has the ability to discipline doctors for "causing harm" to patients, under Business & Profession Codes 651, 2234, 2261, and 2262 - this bill is duplicative and unnecessary.
That's the least one could say, without being one iota controversial.
2. The CA Medical Board does not currently support this bill.
Maybe that carries more clout, yes? Maybe the Governor doesn't even know this!
3. Other groups like A Voice For Choice Advocacy's (AVFCA) OPPOSE IT.
Status:
SB 2098 Passed Assembly Business & Professions Committee (12-5-2), Assembly Appropriations Committee (12-4-0), full Assembly (53-20-5), Senate Business, Professions & Economic Development Committee (9-4-1) AND Senate Appropriations Committee (5-2-0).
4. It passed the Senate Floor any floor session - AND IT IS ON THE GOVERNOR'S DESK NOW, threatening a physician's decision-making made in conjunction with a private patient, who has individual autonomy.
It is too late to talk to your legislator. It is time to contact the Governor.
