My arms are short. As a petite woman of 5’4” and 120 lb, I appreciate there are many activities that I am simply unable to physically perform.
And as a man of 6’2” and 220 lb, I also appreciate that there are many things that my husband, Ed, can do for me.
While it is very rare that his hands are too big to reach in and put a wrench somewhere, most of the time he can do things with a wink. Whether it’s opening a jar, lifting a box, or reaching a high shelf, I repeatedly witness that his physique gives him distinct advantages that allow him to literally move the earth.
He is a plant scientist and former farm advisor turned contractor. He has built ponds and waterfalls. The physical labor in all seasons, plus excavating, moving boulders, and carrying rocks has both built him a reputation and given him a different perspective of the earth.
I think that because he can change a landscape, he thinks differently. What I take for granted, Ed can change.
He looks at the world differently.
It's like magic, POOF! solid land…
~ and then, POOF! A waterfall and pond!
One day, I jumped on a ladder to make myself his height. I was amazed that I could see so much from up there! From walking in a crowd to entering a store and knowing where the sections are located, I thought to myself, “What a different world.”
Countless times, I have had to wait at the grocery store for someone’s husband to reach up and get a bottle or box from the top shelf. It made me weigh whether or not I really needed it, and also made me realize how few store employees walk down the aisles and make themselves available for such random things. Due to the trouble, I’ve had to wait, or just leave without getting my item.
When I had a pain clinic in the Los Angeles area, there was a time we were staffed by all women.
For the first time, it made me wonder why teams of just women don’t build skyscrapers. Or put out fires. Why are 100% of skyscrapers made by men? It’s because God made them different than women, and that is good.

The Importance of Men
Here’s to all the wonderful men in our beautiful world, men who use their strength and determination to protect and provide for the benefit of women and children. To our men who make this world a better place by being in the trenches and taking the tolls on their bodies. God bless every one of you.
I think about all the times that a man’s strength has literally saved our lives. And I am grateful for the innate rescuers that men are. Men are bold, unafraid to venture, and defensive of the weak. Women are fierce mama bears, too, but they don’t have the stance. Men brace themselves to lift people up from the mire. They walk into fires. They stand between women and harm.
To All Men: Thank you for being you.
