The aircraft is falling and yawwing in a circle about its yaw axis, exactly what an automobile does in a spinout on a highway. The pilot demonstrates how to recover from a flat spin by using the flight controls to add drag that resists the spin, restoring control.
The video of the crashing Brazilian airliner showed no spin happening at all. The pilot clearly had full control of the plane and was pitched nose low, in an obvious effort to increase speed and gain lift. But he ran out of airspace and that ended all their lives, when the plane struck the ground.
A US crash, Colgan Air Flight 3407, on approach to the Buffalo, NY airport in 2009, caused by ice weighting down the plane until it was overloaded, actually was made worse because the pilot did not realize he needed to gain speed to restore lift. Blackbox recordings from that crash reveal confusion in the cockpit, with the First Officer fighting to increase airspeed and the panicked pilot reducing speed. Like the Brazilian crash, Colgan Air Flight 3407 struck a residential area, destroying a house and killing a man, whose wife and daughter ran from the flames and survived.
Bottom line: Humid air at temperatures below freezing can be deadly for aviators. Just as a slow leak in a boat full of sleeping crew and passengers can fill it with water before anyone aboard notices, ice can weigh down a plane before the crew realize they are too heavy to fly. Best is to divert around known icing conditions and land elsewhere.
