What did happen is that under the Bretton Woods treaty, the Five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council (that's China, Russia, France, the UK and the US pledged 1/5 of their gold to the IMF along with some currency. During the 1971 Crisis, Nixon persuaded the IMF to issue Special Drawing Rights to this stockpile and circuited them.
