Estimated 1.1 Billion Wasted COVID-19 Shot Doses
Do you remember in March, 2021 when desperate people ran to get the COVID-19 vaccine tried to jump in line ahead of those deemed top priority?
On January 3, 2021, “Vaccine Chasers” were filmed trying to a crowd in to get a COVID vaccine. Of these, The LA Times reported,
“Some who flock to the sites spend hours waiting in the hope of catching a lucky break.”
Priority treatment was given to hospital board members, hospital trustees, and hospital donors around the U.S. who were given early access or at least an offer for vaccinations. This raised complaints about favoritism and inequity - at a time when the developing world had virtually no doses.
In a June 6, 2022 article, NBC News reported CDC data that just over 11% of federally-distributed of COVID-19 shot doses were trashed:
“Pharmacies, states, U.S. territories and federal agencies discarded 82.1 million Covid vaccine doses from December 2020 through mid-May —… ”
In this same article, NBC News stated,
Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest pharmacy chains, wasted 8.3 million doses, or about 10.5 percent of the nearly 79.6 million doses it received.
"The latest CDC guidance advises that providing COVID-19 vaccinations should be prioritized, even if it leads to vaccine waste," the company said.
Health Policy Watch said,
“… all public reports of vaccine waste and expirations from around the world, totalling some 158 million doses.
The majority of the reporting on wastage did not specify, however, which vaccine type was discarded. Of those which do name the manufacturer, Russia’s Sputnik V was the most squandered with over 25 million doses that are known to have been unused. This was followed by AstraZeneca’s reported 19 million wasted jabs.”

Why Trash COVID-19 Vaccines?
Reasons why vaccines may need to be trashed, sometimes in bulk, are varied and include the following:
1. Declining Demand
In my own unofficial surveys, many vaccinated + boosted do NOT want any more shots. After Pfizer admitted there was never a need to get vaccinated for your grandmother, i.e., no studies were done on transmission, Pffft! There went their trust in any vaccine whatsoever.
From India’s biggest manufacturer:
"The booster vaccines have no demand as people now seem fed up with Covid," Mr Poonawala told reporters on Thursday. "Honestly, I'm also fed up. We all are."
2. Multidose Vials that Left Unused Doses
A multidose vial allows one injection after another out of the same larger vial, with some chance that each withdrawal dose is less concentrated than the previous. The leftover vial can be routinely discarded.
3. Temperature issues
Storage at the wrong temperature requires a vaccine to be discarded. “Mistakes” in this regard have been done with thousands of doses.
4. Expired Vials
Some expiration dates are in 6 months; others are 9 months. When it expires, COVID vaccines are discarded.
5. Broken Vials
Accidental breakage leads to waste.
WHO Has a Formula to Diminish Wastage When Ordering Vaccines
Defined as the comparison between the total number of vaccine does administered and the number of doses supplied, the WHO has this forumla to diminish wastage:
1 − (1 − 𝑤𝐶 )𝑛 × (1 − 𝑤𝑂 )
In case that’s too hard, the WHO also has a calculation for anticipated wastage rate calculations:

While WHO continues to encourage and help calculate reductions in wastage, they admit,
“Despite the availability of guidance on vaccine wastage monitoring, country studies demonstrate that vaccine wastage monitoring is a weak area of program management globally.”
